CRYPTO Token
A crypto token is a digital asset created on top of a blockchain.
Unlike a cryptocurrency coin that usually has its own blockchain, a token typically uses an existing blockchain infrastructure.
For example:
Bitcoin is a coin because it runs on its own blockchain
Many tokens run on the Ethereum network
Simple analogy
Think of a blockchain as an operating system:
Blockchain = Android or iOS
Token = an app built on top of it
The blockchain provides the infrastructure, while tokens represent different things.
What tokens can represent
A token can represent:
Money or value
Ownership
Voting rights
Access to a service
In-game items
Loyalty points
Digital art (NFTs)
Common types of crypto tokens
Utility tokens
Used to access products or services.
Example:
Paying fees inside a decentralized app
Governance tokens
Allow holders to vote on project decisions.
Stablecoins
Tokens designed to maintain a stable value, often tied to currencies like the US dollar.
Examples:
USD Coin
Tether
Security tokens
Represent ownership in an asset, similar to digital shares.
NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens)
Unique tokens representing ownership of a specific digital item.
How tokens are created
Many are created using standards on blockchains like:
ERC-20 on Ethereum
SPL tokens on Solana
These standards make tokens compatible with wallets and exchanges.
Difference between a coin and a token
| Coin | Token |
|---|---|
| Has its own blockchain | Built on another blockchain |
| Example: Bitcoin | Example: many ERC-20 tokens |
| Mainly used as money/network fuel | Can represent many kinds of assets |
Why tokens matter
Tokens enable decentralized applications (“dApps”) to create economies without relying on traditional banks or centralized systems.
They are heavily used in:
Decentralized finance (DeFi)
Blockchain gaming
NFT marketplaces
DAOs (decentralized organizations)
Important caution
Not all crypto tokens are legitimate investments.
Some have:
No real utility
Poor security
Scam characteristics
Extreme price volatility
So it’s important to understand:
What the token does
Who created it
How supply works
Whether it has real adoption or value beyond speculation
