Stable Coin
A stablecoin is a type of cryptocurrency designed to keep a stable price, usually by being tied (“pegged”) to another asset such as:
- The US dollar
- Gold
- Other currencies
- Sometimes other cryptocurrencies
For example, a USD stablecoin aims to stay close to:
1 token≈1 USD1 \text{ token} \approx 1 \text{ USD}1 token≈1 USDWhy stablecoins exist
Most cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or Ethereum can fluctuate heavily in price.
Stablecoins try to combine:
- The speed and programmability of crypto
- With the price stability of traditional money
Common stablecoins
Tether (USDT)
One of the most widely used stablecoins.
USD Coin (USDC)
A dollar-backed stablecoin issued by regulated financial partners.
DAI
A decentralized stablecoin backed mainly by crypto collateral.
Main types of stablecoins
1. Fiat-backed stablecoins
Backed by reserves like dollars held in banks.
Example:
- 1 USDC token is intended to be backed by about 1 USD in reserves.
Pros:
- Usually more stable
- Easier to understand
Cons:
- Requires trust in the issuing company
2. Crypto-backed stablecoins
Backed by other cryptocurrencies locked in smart contracts.
Example:
- DAI
Pros:
- More decentralized
Cons:
- More complex
- Can become unstable during market crashes
3. Algorithmic stablecoins
Use software rules and token supply adjustments to maintain price stability.
Pros:
- No traditional reserves needed
Cons:
- Higher risk
- Some have collapsed dramatically
A famous example was the collapse of TerraUSD in 2022.

Risks
Stablecoins are not risk-free.
